What do geologists actually earn?

The Bureau of Labor Statistics reported a May 2024 median annual wage of $99,240 for geoscientists, against $49,500 across all occupations. That headline number hides most of what matters. The lowest 10 percent earned under $58,790 and the highest 10 percent earned above $178,880, a spread of more than $120,000 within one occupational code.

Anyone quoting you a single geologist salary is compressing that spread into a number that describes almost nobody. The useful question is not what geologists earn. It is what geologists earn in the industry you intend to work in.

Where do geologists get paid the most?

Mining, quarrying, and oil and gas extraction, at a $148,760 median. Federal government follows at $116,470, then state government at $86,780, engineering services at $86,620, and consulting at $83,420.

That is a gap of more than $65,000 between the top and bottom industries for people who share a job title and often share a degree. Industry choice moves your earnings more than institutional prestige, more than GPA, and more than almost any decision you make as a student. It is also the variable least discussed on university program pages.

Why is environmental consulting hiring faster than oil and gas?

Because the work is driven by regulation rather than by commodity prices. Environmental scientists and specialists account for about 90,300 jobs with roughly 8,500 openings a year. Geoscientists account for about 25,100 jobs with 2,000. That is more than four times the annual hiring.

Contaminated land does not stop existing when a commodity cycle turns, and the statutory obligations to investigate and remediate it do not pause either. The trade is real and worth stating plainly: environmental work has a lower median at $80,060, and far more doors. For most graduates, more doors is the better deal.

Is GIS worth learning if I want to be a geologist?

It is close to non-negotiable. GIS and geospatial programs are the largest category in our database at 855 programs, and that reflects employer demand rather than academic fashion. Cartographers and photogrammetrists show 6 percent projected growth through 2034, the fastest of any occupation we track.

The practical argument is about legibility. A geology graduate with real spatial data skills clears the hiring filter at environmental firms, utilities, planning departments, and government agencies as well as at traditional geoscience employers. A geology graduate without them is competing for a much smaller set of roles.
