The actual difference

Geology observes the Earth directly. You look at rock, map relationships, interpret history, and reason from physical evidence you can put your hand on. Geophysics measures the Earth indirectly through its physical fields, then solves an inverse problem to infer what produced the measurements.

The mathematics is the real gate

Geophysics requires calculus through differential equations, linear algebra, signal processing, and inverse theory. This is a sequenced chain, and starting it late in an undergraduate program is very difficult to recover from.

Geology requires solid mathematics but tolerates a later start and a lower ceiling. Students frequently move from geology into applied geophysics at the graduate level; the reverse is easier still.

Employment reality for both

Both are reported by BLS within the geoscientists occupation: May 2024 median $99,240, about 25,100 jobs, roughly 2,000 annual openings. Geophysicists tend toward the upper half of that wage distribution because the quantitative barrier limits supply.

Geophysics skills also transfer outside geoscience. Signal processing, inversion, and scientific programming are valued in data-heavy industries generally, which is meaningful insurance in a small field.

What this means for you

If you are strong in mathematics and undecided, start on the geophysics track. It preserves the option to move toward geology, while the reverse move is harder.

If mathematics is a struggle, choose geology honestly and build depth in field skills and GIS. A strong field geologist with spatial data fluency is more employable than a weak geophysicist.
