Geophysics is the most portable earth science specialization. The same inversion and signal processing skills work in energy, mining, hazards, engineering, and increasingly in data science roles outside geoscience entirely.

What the work actually involves
This is the most quantitative mainstream geoscience path. Substantial programming and mathematics, often more time at a workstation than in the field, and a real premium on people who understand both the physics and the geology.

The mathematics is the filter
This specialization has a genuine prerequisite structure. Differential equations, linear algebra, signal processing, and inverse theory are load-bearing, not decorative. Students who arrive underprepared in mathematics generally do not recover the gap late.
The upside of that filter is scarcity. Employers across several industries compete for a small pool, and the skills transfer well outside geoscience if you ever want them to.

What this means for you
Decide early, because the mathematics sequence has to start in your first year. Switching into geophysics late in an undergraduate program is difficult in a way that switching into most other geoscience specializations is not.
If you are strong quantitatively and undecided, this path preserves the most options. It leads into geoscience, and it also leads out of it.

There is no single route, but there is a common sequence. Each stage below answers a different question, and the order matters more than people expect.

Geophysics if you are strong in mathematics and physics and want quantitative subsurface work. Geology if you want to work more directly with rock, field observation, and interpretation. Geophysics is more portable; geology is more flexible to enter.
Do I need a PhD?
For research and academic roles, generally yes. For industry interpretation and processing, a master is typically sufficient.
Is exploration the only option?
