Here is the number they leave off. The occupation has about 25,100 jobs total, with 3 percent projected growth through 2034 and roughly 2,000 openings a year. It is a well-paid occupation and a small one. Both facts have to inform your decision.

Geographers have the second highest median wage in that list and the fewest openings by an order of magnitude. About 1,500 jobs nationally, projected to decline 3 percent. A high median wage on a tiny occupation is not an opportunity, it is a statistical artifact of a small, senior, credentialed population.

Who this degree works for, and who it does not

The generic question of whether a geology degree is worth it has no generic answer, because the people asking it are in completely different positions. Here is the honest breakdown by situation.

If you are a school leaver choosing a first degree, this works when you attend a public institution at in-state cost, the program has a real field component, and you treat GIS as a core requirement rather than an elective. Under those three conditions the degree reliably produces employable graduates. Remove any one of them and the calculation gets much worse.

If you are a career changer, look hard at whether you need the full degree. Someone with an existing bachelor degree in any science can often reach environmental or geospatial work faster through a graduate certificate or a targeted master, and a second bachelor degree in geology is frequently the most expensive route to the same destination.

If you already work in the field as a technician, the degree is usually worth it and often partly funded by your employer. You have the advantage of knowing exactly what the work involves, which is the single biggest information gap for everyone else making this decision.

BLS medians are national and describe the whole employed population in an occupation, not new graduates. A median of $99,240 for geoscientists is not an entry-level figure, and treating it as one will produce disappointment. Total cost is tuition and fees, plus living costs above what you would spend anyway, plus field camp, plus four years of foregone earnings. Against that, weigh entry-level pay in environmental consulting or geospatial work rather than the geoscientist median, because those are the roles that hire in volume.

Accreditation, and a misconception worth correcting

Geology degrees typically sit outside its scope, and geological engineering is the main exception where it applies.

What matters instead is the institution regional accreditation, which is what makes the degree recognized and credits transferable, and the coursework distribution your state licensing board requires. Boards specify subjects and credit hours rather than a programmatic accreditor.

So the accreditation question worth asking is not whether ABET has approved the program. It is whether the curriculum satisfies the board in the state where you intend to practice. That is answerable in advance, in writing, and almost nobody does it.

If it requires substantial debt at a private institution with no field program, the answer is no.
