The Program Quality Index distributes 100 points across seven factors, all computed from attributes institutions publish about their own programs. It covers 1,340 programs at 491 institutions. It measures documented program characteristics, not teaching quality or graduate outcomes.
The principle
A ranking is only useful if you can inspect the reasoning. Ours is built on a single rule: every factor must be computable from something the institution itself publishes. That constraint rules out a lot of things people expect in a ranking, and it rules out precisely the things that make rankings untrustworthy.
It means no surveys of academic reputation. No self-reported placement rates. No proprietary adjustments we decline to explain. If you looked at the same program pages we did, you could reconstruct the score.
The seven factors

Why these weights
Applied and field experience carries the most weight at 20 points because it is the factor our own team screens for when hiring, and because it is the component most likely to be quietly reduced when a department is under budget pressure. A program that documents field, laboratory, practicum, or capstone work is making a commitment that costs it money.
Departmental depth at 18 points reflects a practical reality. A unit running one program has one or two faculty in the subject; a unit running eight has a faculty group, elective breadth, and someone available to supervise undergraduate research. Depth is a reasonable proxy for the things a prospectus will not tell you.
Curriculum transparency at 15 points is deliberately punitive. If an institution will not publish an accessible course list, that is information about the institution. Students should not have to request a curriculum to find out what they would study, and programs that make it easy score better here for exactly that reason.
The index we are building toward
The seven factors above are what we can currently compute from published program data. They are not the full set we believe a program index should measure. Below is the target model, and the reason each missing factor is missing. We are publishing it because a methodology that only describes its current state, without saying where it falls short, is asking to be taken on faith.

Three of those seven factors are the ones ranking sites most often claim to measure, and they are exactly the three that cannot be measured honestly from public data. Accreditation, employer partnerships, and graduate outcomes get scored anyway across this industry, using proxies nobody discloses. We would rather show you an incomplete index and tell you which parts are missing than a complete-looking one built on numbers we invented.
What the index does not measure
This is the section other ranking sites omit, and it is the most important part of this page. The index is silent on the following, and none of the silences are accidental.
- Teaching quality. Not measurable at national scale from published data. Anyone claiming to rank it is inferring it from proxies without telling you.
- Graduate salaries and placement. Available only as institutional self-report, which is marketing. We use federal occupational data instead, and we attach it to careers rather than to schools.
- Cost. The single most important variable, and the one we cannot represent honestly at scale. Published tuition tells you very little once residency and aid are applied.
- Admission selectivity. A measure of applicant volume, not of educational quality.
- Accreditation status. We do not currently score it. Unlike engineering with ABET, geoscience has no single equivalent programmatic accreditor, and institutional accreditation does not discriminate between programs.
- Individual faculty. For graduate study in particular, a specific advisor matters more than any institutional score. The index cannot see this and you should weight it above the index.
Use this index to build a shortlist, then stop using it. The decision is made by cost after aid, the field requirement, licensure alignment, and a conversation with the department. A ranking that told you it was the last word would be lying to you.
How the program database works
Each record holds the institution, department, location, program title, credential level, documented delivery format, subject classification, and a direct link to the institution's official program page. Subject classification is applied programmatically from the program title and department name, across geology and earth science, GIS and geospatial, environmental, hydrogeology, geophysics, petroleum, paleontology, surveying, remote sensing, planning, cartography, and data science.
Rankings show one entry per institution so a single large department cannot occupy half a list. Where an institution offers several qualifying programs, we display its highest scoring record.

The full program database is published openly, with the Quality Index score on every record. If you want to check our arithmetic, rank the programs differently, or use the data for your own research, take it. A methodology you cannot audit against the underlying data is a claim rather than a method.

Known limitations
Coverage is partial. The database holds 1,340 programs at 491 institutions, which is substantial but not every program in the United States. A school's absence is not a judgment.
Classification is automated and imperfect. A program with an unusual title may be tagged into a broader category than its content warrants, or missed by a narrow one. We would rather you knew that than assumed a precision the method does not have.
Coverage is also uneven by subject. Our geospatial and environmental categories are considerably deeper than our petroleum and paleontology categories, and where a category is thin, the ranking page says so at the top rather than padding the list.
Frequently asked questions
Can a school pay to rank higher?
No. Scores are computed from documented program attributes by the same code for every institution. There is no mechanism by which an institution can purchase a position, and no one at an institution is consulted before a ranking is published.
Why do you not use reputation surveys?
Because they measure name recognition. Asking department heads to rate peer institutions produces a stable ordering that correlates with age, size, and marketing budget, and tells a prospective student nothing about whether a program will prepare them for work.
Why is cost not a scoring factor?
Because we cannot measure it honestly at national scale. Published tuition is close to meaningless once residency, aid, and year of entry are applied. Rather than score a number we know is wrong, we tell you to get the real figure from the institution and weight it heavily yourself.
How often is the index recalculated?
Scores are computed at build time from the current program database, so any database update is reflected immediately across every ranking. The review date on each page indicates when the underlying data was last checked.
