Certified Petroleum Geologist

A peer-reviewed certification of professional competence and ethical standing in petroleum geology. Distinct from, and not a substitute for, state licensure.

Quick answer

A peer-reviewed certification of professional competence and ethical standing in petroleum geology. Distinct from, and not a substitute for, state licensure. Issued by American Association of Petroleum Geologists. Intended for experienced petroleum geoscientists seeking peer-reviewed professional certification.

Our position

Useful within the industry, invisible outside it. If there is any chance you will move to environmental, water, or geotechnical work later, the state PG license is the credential that travels. Get that first.

Certification is not licensure

This distinction causes real confusion and occasionally real career damage. A certification is issued by a professional association and reflects peer assessment of competence. A license is issued by a state and confers legal authority to practice in defined ways. They are different instruments.

The CPG can strengthen professional standing within the petroleum sector. It does not authorize you to sign a regulatory submission in a state that licenses geologists. Only a state license does that.

What this means for you

If your career is firmly inside the petroleum industry, the CPG is a reasonable mid-career credential and signals engagement with the professional community.

If you want optionality, prioritize state PG licensure. Given how cyclical this industry is, we consider optionality the higher value purchase for most early-career geoscientists.

Fees, eligibility rules, and examination windows change. Confirm every figure on this page with the issuer before you plan around it.

Frequently asked questions

Is the CPG required to work in petroleum geology?

No. It is a voluntary professional certification, not an employment requirement.

Should I get the CPG or a PG license?

If you can only pursue one, the state PG license generally carries broader legal weight and transfers across sectors. The CPG is a within-industry professional signal.

Requirements, fees, and examination schedules are set by the issuing body and change without notice. Nothing on this page substitutes for the issuer's current published requirements. Reviewed August 14, 2026.
