What the work actually involves
This is a civil engineering discipline. It requires an engineering degree, typically ABET accredited, and follows the FE and PE licensure sequence rather than the geology PG route.
Engineering geology is not geotechnical engineering
These two titles get used interchangeably and they are legally distinct. An engineering geologist characterizes ground conditions, geological hazards, and material properties, and can be a licensed Professional Geologist. A geotechnical engineer designs the structural response to those conditions and must be a licensed Professional Engineer to take responsibility for that design.
They collaborate constantly. But you cannot become a geotechnical engineer with a geology degree, and discovering that after graduation is the reason this section exists.
